It’s fair to say that building custom homes is in our blood. What David Croom started in 1978 is now a thriving family-owned business. David's son, Charles, is leading the way as the second generation of builders in a community that expects a level of quality and service synonymous with Croom Construction Company. We believe giving back to the community that our families call home is equally important.
“This year has been a testament and challenge to the way we do business – ensuring our staff, colleagues and clients receive everything they need, regardless of what’s happening throughout the world. It’s at the heart of everything we do,” Charles said.
We have always believed that your home is essential and deserves to be built and managed as the investment it is, but 2020 created a laser-focused reality for why our mission and ethics are so important. We’re happy to introduce our first edition of Constructing Conversations. Our goals are to foster thoughtful dialogue, feature beautiful projects, and shine a light on the talented artists and teams who make it all possible. Follow us, stay connected, and let us hear from you soon.
This classic riverfront retreat in the heart of John’s Island has everything a family wants today – a central, transitional living space that seamlessly opens to equally well-designed outdoor living areas. Finished in the Spring of 2017, the whole house renovation was a collaboration between our Croom Construction team and architects Moulton Layne P.L.
Interestingly, one of the most unique features is the spectacular outdoor shower. The homeowners requested that it be connected to, or at least accessible from, the master bath. Along with Moulton Layne, the team designed and built a rather cool solution. The large master shower with an exterior glass French door opens to the private outdoor shower, which is surrounded by lush landscaping and a privacy wall. This not only provides a seamless transition, the French door also floods the interior shower with natural sunlight.
Major renovations can present interesting challenges once the construction phase begins. With this project, we discovered the existing copper piping was not in good shape and could create expensive problems for the homeowners down the road. When the house was originally built, it was typical for copper piping to feed from under the slab. Using a new PEX flexible piping, our team re-plumbed the whole house from overhead and ran the main water line to the street. It’s a perfect example of when new technology has the ability to create really smart solutions for improving a home’s efficiency. This home has beautiful views of the Indian River Lagoon.
Moulton Layne, P.L. has designed many beautiful projects that Croom Construction has built over the years, including the riverfront home featured in this issue. David Moulton and Scott Layne maintain a reputation for the highest quality architectural design and all of us at Croom enjoy the collaborations. Each project is thoughtfully planned with creative solutions. Whether it’s new residential construction or a comprehensive renovation, every detail is meticulously designed.

Meet Whitehall Professional Property Management's new ‘Dream Team,’ Michael and Jennifer Sawyer. Fate is an interesting thing. Until recently, the Sawyers called a tiny Bahamian island of only 550 people their home. After working for years with property management companies, they ventured out and started their own company in 2013. Building their slice of paradise was working as planned until September 1, 2019. Hurricane Dorian ravaged their island, destroying their home and most of the homes they managed. Unsure of where to turn next, Michael and Jennifer made the short trip to Florida’s east coast and eventually set roots in Vero Beach. Whitehall is thrilled to welcome the 'Dream Team' to our team of professionals.
