When a husband and wife first approached us a few years ago, it was obvious they were enjoying their oceanfront condo in Orchid Island. It fit their lifestyle and everything they loved about Vero Beach. They also loved their family's visits and needed to expand their living spaces to accommodate children and grandchildren. With the purchase of an oceanfront home along Holoma Drive, they turned to Croom Construction’s 40+ years of renovation experience to get the job done.
Our primary objectives were to enlarge the home to allow more bedrooms and baths and create a focal point with a fireplace wall in the main living area, ultimately making the home more contemporary. What transpired was a brilliant solution, albeit it an engineering challenge. The home had a covered walkway between the house and garage, which we determined could be a smart solution to create a new guest house situation. Rather than enlarge the main house footprint, we literally raised the roof above the garage to add two bedrooms and two baths. We then built a staircase from the garage to the new second story, which ensured guests could access the suites even during inclement weather. This added an additional 1,000 square feet of living space, for a total of 4,300 square feet under air.
To modernize the main living area, our team installed a sleek gas fireplace flush with the existing wall. It created a focal point and work of art, ultimately transforming the main living area into a more contemporary gathering area. Together with Leah Muller Interiors, we achieved results the homeowners wanted, including sophisticated seaside design elements, a contemporary design, and modern amenities with plenty of room for family visits.

Energy and enthusiasm are necessities for the interior designers we work with on a daily basis. Their organizational skills and design talents are the difference between mediocre results and excellence. Leah Muller Interiors and her team consistently perform above and beyond.
Before moving to Florida, Leah received a Bachelor of Science degree from Drexel University and continued her studies working at two prestigious architectural firms in Philadelphia, PA. Historical homes across Philadelphia and the Main Line began transforming with her cutting-edge style and unique architecture-meets-designer perspective. Leah soon moved to Vero Beach, bringing her talent to our coastal community.
Croom Construction has worked for more than 20 years with Leah and her team, and we appreciate their attention to detail and signature style. We always look forward to working together because their client communication skills are stellar and project decisions are well organized.
We periodically post our Project Managers’ favorite design elements as Instagram stories to give you access to logistics that make our custom homes remarkable. Our first story is revealed through the eyes of Aaron Benson.
Custom putting green at a John’s Island villa scores big in Aaron’s book.
Q: What goes into designing a personal pitching and putting green?
So much, actually. We enlisted Jim Walton of Southwest Greens who has completed personal putting greens for PGA Tour greats like Jack Nicklaus, Rickie Fowler and Dustin Johnson. Jim is the real deal. The level of detail in his drawings is incredible and learning about the installation process was even more intriguing. There are many types of artificial turf and, like me, most people initially think a putting green is merely a turf carpet over a compacted substrate. It’s quite the contrary. Over 200 bags of silica sand (7 pounds. per sq ft) was worked into the putting turf to achieve realistic feel and performance. The green achieved a stimpmeter reading of almost 12. The chipping box and fringe grass starts ...read more
